Neural representation of abstract task structure during generalization

چکیده

Cognitive models in psychology and neuroscience widely assume that the human brain maintains an abstract representation of tasks. This assumption is fundamental to theories explaining how we learn quickly, think creatively, act flexibly. However, neural evidence for a verifiably generative task has been lacking. Here, report experimental paradigm requires forming such adaptively novel conditions without feedback. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, observed structure was represented within left mid-lateral prefrontal cortex, bilateral precuneus, inferior parietal cortex. These results provide support instantiation long-supposed setting where can verify its influence. Such afford massive expansions behavioral flexibility additional experience, vital characteristic cognition.

Neural representation of stimulus-response associations during task preparation.

A partially informative cue presented before a stimulus can facilitate the production of the response. Prior information about an upcoming target can increase brain activity in both stimulus (c.f., Desimone and Duncan, 1995) and response (c.f., Leuthold et al., 1996) processing regions; however, it is unclear how the representation of the task might influence the recruitment of this network of ...

Neural Headline Generation on Abstract Meaning Representation

Neural network-based encoder-decoder models are among recent attractive methodologies for tackling natural language generation tasks. This paper investigates the usefulness of structural syntactic and semantic information additionally incorporated in a baseline neural attention-based model. We encode results obtained from an abstract meaning representation (AMR) parser using a modified version ...

SemEval-2017 Task 9: Abstract Meaning Representation Parsing and Generation

In this report we summarize the results of the 2017 AMR SemEval shared task. The task consisted of two separate yet related subtasks. In the parsing subtask, participants were asked to produce Abstract Meaning Representation (AMR) (Banarescu et al., 2013) graphs for a set of English sentences in the biomedical domain. In the generation subtask, participants were asked to generate English senten...

The neural representation of abstract words: the role of emotion.

It is generally assumed that abstract concepts are linguistically coded, in line with imaging evidence of greater engagement of the left perisylvian language network for abstract than concrete words (Binder JR, Desai RH, Graves WW, Conant LL. 2009. Where is the semantic system? A critical review and meta-analysis of 120 functional neuroimaging studies. Cerebral Cortex. 19:2767-2796; Wang J, Con...

Communicating Hierarchical Neural Controllers for Learning Zero-shot Task Generalization

The ability to generalize from past experience to solve previously unseen tasks is a key research challenge in reinforcement learning (RL). In this paper, we consider RL tasks defined as a sequence of high-level instructions described by natural language and study two types of generalization: to unseen and longer sequences of previously seen instructions, and to sequences where the instructions...
